In the Messari Crypto Theses 2023, Flashbots (one of the leading teams working on MEV) made an attempt to categorize different forms of MEV based on value accrual
MAFIA EV - Value (user funds) that an actor or coalition of actors (wallet, searcher, builder, validator) gain from having an asymmetric knowledge of the user's intent (transaction instructions)
MOLOCH EV - Value that a system loses from lack of co-ordination among its actors (wallet, searcher, builder, validator). For e.g. The searcher/ builder will not address the MEV opportunity unless there is enough inefficiency to price in the risk associated with executing the MEV transaction
MONARCH EV - Value that accrues to the security provider (validator) and can be redistributed across the supply chain (stakers, wallet, searcher, builder, and user as well)
It also makes a note that:
An ideal system is composed solely of 100% Monarch EV and no Moloch or Mafia EV
A key point to note here is that 'the value' mentioned across all the MEV above is the value extracted from an unsophisticated user and redistributed across more sophisticated actors
